Over age learners facing challenges

Age causes them to change the path of their careers
That is what the 'over age' pupil of Kayamandi High school is facing at the moment.
A school that is based in Stellenbosch has implemented a new age rule of their own which is to get rid of all over age group.
But not everyone is happy about the new rule, since others believe that it will decrease their chances of getting 'UMALUSI' certificate.
The learners are from ninth grade to the 11th grade, most of the learners who are failing to understand the whole situation are those who passed their grades; they feel like their dreams are being shuttered since the colleges have the limited options when it comes to career choices.
Learners claimed to receiving letters before the year, telling them that they are excuse to the school for the coming year because of their age.
But they were given other option, which is to go to college with full bursaries paid by CCD.
According to the school, CCD later last year, advised the students to go to FET College, with the bursaries they have provided.

Vice Principal Tshebetse Ntlali says, no learners were excused, it's only ninth grade learners who were repeating grade 9 for the third time who were advised by CCD to go to FET colleges but they can appeal if they are not happy about the idea.
Some of the learners have managed to appeal and are back in school including the 12th grade Nasiphi Mazizi.

According to Ntlali, some of these learners are over 20 but still doing grade nine.
The bursary is provided so that they will gain skills, Ntlali thinks it is better than being stuck in our place.
Learners who have passed their grades managed to appeal, including those who were heading to grade 12.

Western Cape department of education, Paddy Attwell confirmed that schools may advise the learners, if it will be on their best interest.
