A Movement to combat crime has been launched in Kayamandi.

Young people from all four Non-profit organisations in Kayamandi have come up with strategies to fight crime in the area.

Crime has increased over the years. Others have come up with a plan in the past years where Kayamandi they created a group call Bambanani which means holding hands but it hasn’t been successful.

Kayamandi Police captain Nomvuyo Miti said the program failed because some of the volunteers find jobs and others stop volunteering because they were not getting any money and most of them have families to feed.
Captain was invited by the Stellenbosch Forum to talk about the crime and why crime is spreading rapidly and what are they doing to combat crime. She said the main problem is that they have fewer police officers per shift.
“We have one police van and four police officers per shift. Two of them needs to stay at the police station and two of them to patrol, we do struggle to attend everyone at the same time” said Miti.

She recalls a day when there was a body of a young man who was found dead next to Kayamandi High, she said they got a call to attend a robbery to a family owned wine shop in Kloehnof.

After that gathering young people decide to form the youth organisation called Kaymandi Youth against Crime. They attended gathers hosted by different officials, including Brigadier Mdladla of Stellenbosch Police Service.
KYAC secretary Msimelelo Mpindwana said he learned that Kayamandi Police Station was not meant to be a police it was created to be a contact point while waiting for the Stellenbosch police officers.

The group will embark on their first journey to find answers tomorrow morning. They will have their first protest at the Die Braak in Stellenbosch where Quinton Smit of Stellenbosch municipality community safety will accept the petition.

Chairman of the movement Simphiwe Ntsabo said if it wasn’t for the young people’s dedication, support from churches including NG Kerk in Stellenbosch and the community as a whole this march would be possible.

“Most of our innocent young people have died because of crime, because someone wanted their wallet or cell phone, I think that is why a lot of young people are really keen to supporting the movement.” Said Ntsabo

They are at least six young people who died became of robbery dozens of young people who were stabbed since the beginning of the year.
