on the 60′, 70′s and 80′s Xhosa tribe used to wear these clothes in the rural areas and when there is a ritual, some of these clothes are still in use, in other words. There are some areas here in South Africa, you most of the time find these peolpe in the Eastern Cape, thats where most of the Xhosa people are, Most of the Xhosa’s are in Western Cape, and Eastern Cape, they are few Xhosa people in JHB,Durban. This culture is a proud culture especial the old generation, they love beauty, they put Ingxwala in their faces to protect themselves from the sun. ‘Clicks’ Most of the other tribes are really struggling to say some of the words in Xhosa, first click is ‘X’ Xhosa, secondly ‘C’ Ncinci which means small, icici which means earing, ‘Q’ iqanda which means and Egg, ‘iqaqa‘ which means a ‘polecat‘
some of the examples about our 3 clicks
there are three characterastics inherited clicks in xhosa language, represented by the letters ‘C’, ‘Q’ and ‘X’, and they are referred to as the dENTAL, Palatal and Lateral clicks respectively. The appropriate sounds they represent, are made by breaking a slight suction made with the toungue against the teeth, palate, and side of the mouth.
Each of these clicks sounds are more perceptible when made in conjunction with one of the five vowel sounds, which are voiced.
A. The Dental clicking ‘C’
The ‘c’ click sound is made by breaking a slight suction, that is created by placing the verytip of the tongue against the upper front teeth, where they meet the gums.See diagram position ‘C’.Then while keeping both lips slightly apart, draw the tongue tip away from the teeth into the mouth and thereby causing the breaking of the suction sound “c” to be dectable. The backward movement of the toungue, away form the teeth, is very smal.you may think its comlicated but its no!
when combining this click with the vowel ‘i’, which has the same sound as the ‘i’ in ‘ink’, a Xhosa word ‘icici‘
B The Palatal Clickk ‘Q’
The ‘q’ click sound is made by breaking a slight suction made with the forward portward portion of the tongue pressed flat against the roof of the mouth (Palate), where it curvees downwards towards the upper front teeth. See diagram position ‘Q’. The extreme tip of the tongue is not used in making the palatal click. When breaking the suction, at the palate, a sharp downward movement of the tongue is made, whilst the lips are kept slightly apart. In producing this sound a short downward movement of the lowerr jaw is also made.
When combining this click with the vowel ‘a’ which has the same sound as the ‘a’ in the word ‘par’ or ‘far’, a Xhosa word ‘iqaqa’ is formed , meaning ‘polecat’
C The Lateral Click ‘X’
the ‘x’ click is made by breaking a lateral suction created between the side of the tongue and the related inside surface of the cheek- either side of the tongue and cheek can be used. At the time of making this sound the front part of the tongue is extrended onto the corrugated.
